چکیده

This paper evaluates the feasibility of using shredded tires for removal of organic compounds from landfill leachate. From the batch sorption isotherm experiments, tire chips were found to have 1.4% to 5.6% of the sorption capacity of granular activated carbon on a volume basis. The sorption equilibrium occurred within 2 days for 0.6-, 1.3-, and 2.5-cm size tire chips. The capacity of tire chips to adsorb organic compounds in a multisolute system was almost equal to that in singlesolute systems. Only 3.4% to 7.9% of the organic compounds sorbed in tire chips were desorbed. A design method was proposed to estimate the thickness of a tire layer required for a target organic compound removal from the landfill leachate based on a structure-activity relationship obtained from laboratory tests. Uncontrolled combustion of shredded tires in a landfill -Part 2: Population exposure, public health response, and an air quality index for urban fires.

The Iowa City Landfill in eastern Iowa, United States, experienced a fire lasting 18 days in 2012, in which a drainage layer of over 1 million shredded tires burned, generating smoke that impacted the surrounding metropolitan area of 130,000 people. This emergency required air monitoring, risk assessment, dispersion modeling, and public notification. This paper quantifies the impact of the fire...

Comparison of aerobic and anaerobic degradation of municipal solid waste in bioreactor landfills.

Two landfill bioreactors were operated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in a thermo-insulated room at a constant temperature of 32 degrees C. Reactors were filled with 19.5 kg of shredded synthetic solid waste prepared according to the average municipal solid waste compositions determined in Istanbul and operated under wet-tomb management strategy by using leachate recirculation. Aerobic ...

Removal of parachlorophenol from the aquatic environment by recycled used tires as an adsorbent: Characterization, adsorption, and equilibrium studies

Parachlorophenol has an extended usage in refineries, petrochemical industries, insecticide, and herbicide manufacturing industries. Tire a solid waste, which is disposed in large amounts each year, a large number of them in landfills can cause irreparable environmental impacts. Consequently lots of efforts were done to produce activated carbon from used tires. Activated carbon was made in labo...

Appropriate Use of MSW Leachate Recycling in Municipal Solid Waste Landfilling1

There is considerable interest today in the so-called “biocell” approach toward municipal solid waste (MSW) landfilling in which leachate is introduced back into the landfill. This approach reduces the cost of leachate management and is said to reduce/eliminate the potential for long term landfill gas production and groundwater pollution. However, a critical review of the typical approach being...

Aedes albopictus and Ae. triseriatus eggs survive waste tire processing.

Tires that were either crudely chopped or more finely processed into shreds contained viable eggs. Field-collected remnants of 2-3 chopped tires contained viable Aedes albopictus eggs. After shredding tires seeded with mosquito eggs, 34 (4.6%) of an estimated 746 Ae. albopictus eggs and 21 (2.7%) of an estimated 774 Aedes triseriatus eggs survived. Chopped and shredded tire remnants may serve a...
